EU Parliament sets new emissions targets

The European Parliament has voted by a large majority to introduce legislation to cap average emissions from all new cars at 125g CO2/km from 2015.

The original proposal from the European Commission was for a limit of 120g by 2012.

Carmakers must meet these targets by technical means alone, i.e., without relying on other CO2 saving measures, such as biofuels, special tyres or improvements in air-conditioning systems. From 2020, average car emissions must not exceed 95g CO2/km.
